This award was for a slight hack into the LynxOS system we got with the
Martin-Marietta Delivery Bar Code Sorters. The sources were included, and
I took every opportunity to hack them. This was the only one approved, though
there were much better ones hack-wise; telneting from LynxOS to the NDSS VAX
would lock up the system necessitating a reboot. Turns out the ANSI driver
code was very amateurishly written, and one of the escape sequences put
the LynxOS atterm driver into an infinite loop. I commented this code out,
too, on all the DBCSs even though the modification wasn't approved. Then I
rewrote large parts of the ANSI driver properly (or closer to it than Lynx's
guys did) so that it would display color ASCII art correctly; Tony Sileo from
USPS engineering had sent an animated U. S. flag out that I wanted to see
in color...
By the way, they (USPS technical management)
disapproved of that second modification by claiming that we ET's
shouldn't be using the DBCS to telnet into the VAX in the first place...
philistines...
