apparently, the only difference between the $84 part and the $12 part from GE is the connector. I got the $12 sensor (thermocouple), cut the end off, spliced on the old connector cut off from the dead sensor with crimp terminals, and the oven works again. I can't say for how long, but with that price difference I can replace it several times.
