jc blog - tales of a modern-day nomadic hunter-gatherer

Follow jcomeau_ictx on Twitter This is the weblog of Intrepid Wanderer. You never know what you might find here; graphic descriptions of bodily functions, computer programming secrets, proselytizing for the antichrist, miscellaneous ranting and kvetching, valuable information on living off the land... if you don't share my rather weird interests you may want to try slashdot instead.

You can consider my Del.icio.us links an extension to my blog, as are my LifeTango goals and my other to-do items. My to-buy list is also public, but only for sharing any useful ideas that might be there; I'm not requesting charity, neither do I offer it.

You can find me easily in google searches, as jcomeau, jcomeau_ictx, or jcomeauictx. There are lots of other jcomeaus, but AFAIK I'm the only jcomeau_ictx out there so far.

If you want to comment on anything you see here, try the new Facebook comments, reachable by clicking the "[comment]" link at the end of each post. If for some reason that isn't working, go ahead and email me, jc.unternet.net. You know what to do with the first dot. Make the 'subject' line something reasonably intelligent-looking or it goes plunk! into the spambasket unread.

This RSS feed may or may not work. Haven't fiddled with it in forever. RSS Feed

it's really hard to find reliable data on where the US-Mexico border really is. I've spent hours Googling with nothing really to show for it. but one area is rather unambiguously on the US side of the border and yet within the Mexico border fence, just a few minutes walk from the San Ysidro crossing. I posted on Facebook about it. [comment]

my nullmailer daemon had gone haywire, rescanning the queue hundreds of times per second; my /var/log/mail.log, /var/log/mail.info, and /var/log/syslog were well over 22 gigs each, and the logging daemon itself was hogging 125% of CPU. googling didn't turn up anything, so I punted and apt-get update followed by apt-get install nullmailer, which upgraded to the latest version. finally back to normal. no idea how long that had been going on. took a course in immunology, 5 weeks compressed into two days. I was able to do it by treating all the unknown acronyms, abbreviations, illustrations, etc. as "black boxes" whose purpose would hopefully be gleaned from association. that didn't quite pan out, but I got a lot out of the week 1, 4, and 5 lectures and can take the rest over as many times as I need. after drinking about a liter of my ginger beer yesterday, followed by a "media" each of Victoria and Pacifico, I expected to have at least a little gastrointestinal discomfort today. didn't happen. I wonder if the live yeast made a difference. [comment]

hope I don't jinx myself by saying it, but it looks like my immune system kicked that virus whose symptoms I felt for a few hours only, two or three days ago. really happy about that. [comment]

started a batch of ginger beer last night: shredded a ginger root, added a cone-shaped piloncillo of raw sugar, and boiled it for a few minutes. after it cooled down, added some yeast and stirred. this morning it was bubbling, so I poured it into a gallon bottle, leaving as much of the ginger in the pot as I could, topped it off with water and added a little grapeseed oil at the top as a one-way valve. it's bubbling away nicely in the sun right now. woke up this morning to a loud humming which at first I thought was thousands of flies. later found out it was bees feasting on the acacia flowers overhead. a magical place near the hot springs west of Santiago, BCS. [comment]

this year is the first I've noticed a particular insect or bug invading the house. it's about 1cm long and .8cm wide and spends most of its observed life flat on its back, trying vainly to right itself. I'm thinking of calling it an "ifacgu" bug, for "I've fallen and can't get up". [comment]
